This passage hit me hard today... Luke 20:34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. As it relates to salvation, I never feel "worthy." But those who will be sons and daughters of the resurrection are considered worthy. I believe they are considered worthy because Christ's blood covers them. Thank you Lord for your precious Son.

Interesting piece from Kevin DeYoung. I mention all of this because so much that passes for spirituality these days is nothing more than middle class, 20something coffee culture. If you like jazz, soul patches, earth tone furniture, and lattes, that's cool. But this culture is no holier than the McNugget, Hi-C, Value City, football culture that most people live in. Why does incarnational ministry usually mean hanging out at Starbucks instead of McDonalds?

From Wednesday's reading... Psalm 27: 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord , that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. Lord, in the middle of so many things, help me focus on ONE thing.

It's a tough time right now. Everywhere. Even people in ministry are losing their jobs . In my devotions today I was reminded that we are sojourners, strangers in a foreign land. But we can be generous whether we have little or much, because it all comes from God. 1 Chronicles 29:9 Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord . David the king also rejoiced greatly... 14 “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were . Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. Lord, I know that difficult days are ahead. Help me to trust in you during good times and bad times. Remind me that I'm a sojourner. And help me to be a generous one.

Can you imagine what it would be like to hear a million people trying to speak to you all at the same time? I've wondered before, how does God hear in the midst of all the noise? ( I can't even keep up with all of the noise of Facebook.) Gen 21:15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Let me not look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the boy , and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is . God hears the cry of this weakened child who is about to die and raises him up. Lord, I'm so glad that you hear voices.

I think this is one of those weeks that I have a message instead of just a sermon. It's probably sad that this isn't every week for me; nevertheless, I'm excited about Sunday. I've been trying to work through a burden that has really been pressing me down as of late. I think God may have been using this to prepare me to deliver Sunday's message. Please pray that... I will speak God's words and not mine. I will speak out of humility instead of anger or righteous indignation. People will hear from God by His Spirit. People will be changed or at least start the process of change.

I'm getting ready to do a series of posts on Improving Your Church Website over at FWBMedia.com . I'm by no means a professional, but hopefully I can share a few tips that I think have improved the sites I have worked on. I'd like to review some church sites for ideas. I'd love to look at your church site, if you want to share it. (And no, I won't be criticizing any specific church sites in my posts.) So if you want to share, leave your church web address in the comments or on my Facebook wall.

It's a lot easier to say "Thanks for this great teacher" than it is to live out the teaching. Luke 11:27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “ Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it !” This woman was blessing Christ, but Christ was exhorting her to obey. Lord, forgive me for paying more attention to the teacher than the teaching. Help me to live it!

Our piano player found a new song (or at least new to me) from Brenton Brown called Adoration . I love the bridge of this song, and I really like the way he tags the song with part of Paul Baloche/Matt Redman's A Greater Song at the end. You can check out the New Song Cafe video here . You can also check out Part 1 and Part 2 . So what steps can we put into place to keep us from turning worship into the circus? I think this is a pretty good question. As we were studying Philippians last week, we talked about this verse... Philippians 1: 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. I asked about stealing glory and praise from God. I think that sometimes we do this unintentionally, when worship becomes the circus. One of our group stated they felt that being thankful was one of the things that helped them to keep their focus in worship on the Lord. That really stood out to me. When our worship is an overflow of the thankfulness we have for our God, we will be far away from the circus. Instead of trying to "purpose" worship for evangelism, worship should be a reaction to reflection on the Almighty. As a side note, I've been thinking maybe we should do more singing after we hear from God

Today during our ride in the van up to Decatur I was scanning through radio stations and I landed on Miranda Lambert singing More Like Her. My wife can't stand country music, but she was busy reading and it took a minute before she realized what was on the radio. I now know that my son has her taste for music. He said, "Mom, they should tell those people on American Idol who can't sing, that they should try going country."

I remember one of my seminary professors telling a story about saying a prayer in a Jewish Synagogue. He closed his prayer in Jesus' Name. During a conversation with the local Rabbi, the Rabbi stated that he would not thought much of my professor's faith, if he had closed his prayer in any other way. Here's what the bishop has said about his prayer to be offered tomorrow... Bishop Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Church's only openly gay Bishop is scheduled to open inaugural festivities today with a prayer of his own. In contrast to Warren, Robinson told NPR that he would address his prayer to "the god of our many understandings ," adding, "my intention is not to invoke the name of Jesus but to make this a prayer for Christians and non-Christians alike." -- From the Bully! Some scriptures you hear over and over, but they still sting when you read them. Here's a classic from Sunday's reading... Genesis 18:14 Is anything too hard for the Lord ? Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.

From today's reading ... Luke 10:38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving . And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary . Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” We judge each other on how busy we are. We are offended if someone calls on the phone and asks, "Are you busy?" Of course we are. Any successful person and anyone worth their salt is busy. Right? There was one thing necessary. But Martha was too busy to notice. Lord, help me not to miss the necessary thing. And help me to know when to serve.

Confrontation. Most people hate it. Some people thrive on it. I don't like to deal with it, but I try not to walk away from it. Some people would rather just talk behind your back. They would rather vent to someone who has no stake in the problem. There's another word for that - it's called gossip. This week I had a friend talk to my face. He had some uncomfortable things to say to me. I needed to hear them. He could have ignored the situation or even worse, he could have went behind my back. Instead he was a real man and looked me in the eye . My friend and I may have disagreements in the future, and we may have to have other face to face conversations. But I think I would die for him if I had to. Because he cares enough not to go behind my back.

From Luke 9: 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God. When I am part of something exciting or significant, are people astonished by me or by the majesty of God? Lord, increase my faith. Please help me not to steal praise or glory that belongs to you. Please let my life cause others to be astonished by your majesty.

Have your parents ever told you to " watch that tone " when referring to the way that you speak to them? Have you ever spoken to God with a tone of doubt, or anger, or even sarcasm? When I read about Abram again, I noticed his tone with God... Genesis 15:2 But Abram said, “O Lord God , what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” Some of the older generation in our church were taught to never question God. They were taught that was disrespectful. I think I'm of a different mindset. I think God is big enough to handle any of my small questions. Abram calls God out - how will this happen? And God is kind enough to answer. Lord, let me be bold enough to ask and humble enough to know when to shut up.

Sometimes I think we make knowing God's will this mysterious, hidden, almost unknowable thing. But when we harmonize the gospels we see that maybe it's not as hard as we make it. Look at these three passages and compare them to see the "Will of God." 1. Matthew 12:50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” 2. Mark 3:35 For whoever does the will of God , he is my brother and sister and mother. 3. Luke 8: 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it. ” Do you want to do God's will? Hear His word, then just do it ! It really is simply about obedience.

From yesterday's reading... Luke 7:33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.” This passage reminds me that God's house is a pretty big house. John and Jesus may be the two greatest men who have ever walked on this planet. Yet their lives were so different. One thing they had in common though - they both had plenty of critics. Lord, let my life show forth Your wisdom.

Time for this annual controversy. Should we skip/cancel/postpone/adjust our church service to watch the Super Bowl? Which person do you think is the most spiritual? 1. The Arrogant guy who proudly proclaims, "It's my Christian duty to attend Church; I won't be watching the Super Bowl!" 2. The Arrogant guy who loudly proclaims, "It's my Christian liberty to skip Church; I'll be watching the Super Bowl!" 3. The gal who says, "What's all this fuss about - we don't have church on Sunday Evenings anyways." 4. The guy who invites his unbelieving friends to his Super Bowl Party at Church 5. The gal who invites her unbelieving friends to her Super Bowl Party at Home? 6. The guy who says, "I don't even like football." Feel free to add your own categories in the comments.

Not trying to resurrect old battles here, but I thought the end of this NY Times article Who Would Jesus Smack Down on Mark Driscoll was spot on... Driscoll’s New Calvinism underscores a curious fact: the doctrine of total human depravity has always had a funny way of emboldening, rather than humbling, its adherents.

The perspective on Saul's Death from the author of Chronicles is interesting to me... 1 Chronicles 10:13 So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord , and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. 14 He did not seek guidance from the Lord . Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse. It's seems pretty clear. Saul died for breaking faith. He died because he didn't seek the Lord. Lord, help me to seek You in all things for all my days.

You can catch part 1 here . So here goes...what does "non-attractional" worship look like? Most of you have been around the attractional/missional debate. So if "attractional" worship is basically creating the most dynamic/creative/professional/emotional experience so that people will want to come to our church houses and receive the gospel, then what is "non-attractional" worship? I think that worship is often attractive, but I'm not sure it should be "attractional." When we are crafting a service so that people will want to come and see the show, or come back because the show was good, I'm not so sure we can call that worship. (Pardon my rambling excursion here, but maybe it will help as you try to follow my thoughts.) This is a really hard article for me to write. I don't always have answers, but usually I have pretty clear opinions. But when it comes to corporate worship, the lines between performance and worship blur easily

A good discussion between David Fitch and Ed Stetzer has really got the juices flowing this afternoon. One of the things that really struck me was this idea: Church gatherings should be about a rhythm of life, not a show. Is it ok for corporate Worship to be a show? I guess that depends on how you define your terms. I thought it was pretty funny to look at Webster's definition for "show" and think about the church. I think #4 was my favorite, but #5a is pretty interesting too. 1 : a demonstrative display show of strength> 2a archaic : outward appearance b : a false semblance : pretense show of friendship> c : a more or less true appearance of something : sign d : an impressive display show — John Lahr> e : ostentation 3 : chance 2 show in spite of his background> 4 : something exhibited especially for wonder or ridicule : spectacle 5a : a large display or exhibition arranged to arouse interest or stimulate sales show

What are the first words out of your mouth? Zechariah's were blessing for the Lord. Luke 1:62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. Lord, let my life speak blessings to You.

Did you know that Joab was David's Nephew? Usually I don't get much from genealogies, but tonight while reading from Chronicles it finally dawned on me that Joab and David were related. Sometimes I'm a little slow. 12 Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse. 13 Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, 14 Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, 15 Ozem the sixth, David the seventh. 16 And their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three . 17 Abigail bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.

Sometimes we organize and put together and build. Sometimes we must let go. Ecclesiastes 3:5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; Lord, help me to cast away those things that need to go. Help me to gather together the most important things.
