The Power of a Sad Song

From today's reading...

Deut 31:19 “Now therefore write this song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the people of Israel.

The purpose of this song was to be a witness AGAINST the Israelites. Songs don't always leave you with a happy feeling, but they can be a powerful reminder of the Lord we serve. I'm not going to repost the whole text here, but you can check out Moses' song if you like. You'll see it's not the happiest text.

What "sad" songs do we have in our churches? Do we ever use sad songs to motivate us? A few that come to mind...

  • Must I go and empty handed
  • Come Thou Fount - Third Verse
  • I Must Tell Jesus
Just about any "Casting Crowns" Song...
  • Does Anybody See Her
  • American Dream
Steve Camp's song Don't Tell them Jesus Loves Them.

What's the last "sad" song you sang during one of your services?
