Simple by Rob Morgan - Assurance Part 2

Part 1 was "Can I Know?" Part 2 is "Can I KNOW that I know?" The main scripture this time is:

1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. Concluding Remarks 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

SIMPLE really is simple. To begin chapter 2, Rob gives a good story about a landmark that lets him know he's on the right track. We too can know that we are on the right track. We can know this because a few different reasons or landmarks.


  1. The Oxygen of the Holy Spirit

  2. Our Birth Certificate

  3. Our Family Likeness

I had never thought about this -- we don't remember our physical birth, and yet we function pretty well. Morgan states that believers who may not remember the day and hour of the second birth may also function well, if they possess these 3 things.

The Oxygen of the Holy Spirit...
A believer is regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit. A person who has come to Christ will notice some differences in their life. There is now an interest in spiritual things. There is now and interest in prayer. There is a love for others that wasn't there before. This is a strong sense of peace and the Bible begins to come alive.

Our Birth Certificate...
When we follow Christ are names are recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life. In different passages, Romans 10:13 comes to mind as well as our key passage in this chapter, we see the language of certainty. Will. Shall. Is. It is not vague, but extremely specific. You can know that you belong to God, because of the certainty of His word. It does not fail.

Our Family Likeness...
The third indication of salvation is family likeness. Rob gives a ton of scripture here from 1 John demonstrating postively and negatively this truth. As we grow in Christ we should look more like Christ. Using scriptures like 1 John 2:3 and 1 John 3:14 will help us identify if this is true. Are we keeping Christ's commands? Are we loving the brethren? When we begin to reflect God's love it demonstrates the change that He has made in us.

Just Making Memories or Ear Piercing--The Hard Way.

I always wondered what it felt like to have your ear pierced, but no longer do I wonder... This weekend Grandpa Penn came down to take the guys fishing. We got up early and headed out to the lake in the Jon Boat. We really had a great day catching fish and just spending time together. The weather was great - this was the first good cold fall weekend. The leaves were turning and there was a mist on the water. (That's a picture of Old Kinmundy Lake.) My son started us off with a nice catch. It was also a lot of fun to see the Largemouth hit Grandpa's frog lure on the top of the water. I even had a lot of fun setting the hook on some Largemouth myself. But later in the afternoon, someone set the hook on me! Obama, Abortion & Young Evangelicals

There is a pretty heated discussion over on Tony Jones blog about this very topic. If I understand the commentators correctly... The Obama supporters think that his presidency will actually reduce abortions even though Obama is a strong Freedom of Choice Act supporter. They feel that Bush has done nothing to lower the amount of abortions and that by not developing a stronger economy and by not helping the poor he has contributed to more unwanted pregnancies. The McCain supporters think that McCain will continue to nominate conservative justices and will eventually overturn Roe v. Wade. They believe that Bush has helped the cause by appointing conservative justices and has taken a strong stand on stem cell research. Again, I'll ask a question I asked all the way back in February about Obama and abortion .
